In Blender, duplicating an object or mesh component creates a fully copy of it that can then be changed independently of the original. To create a linked copy, such that changes to one will affect the other, use Duplicate Linked.
Shift D: Duplicate
Alt D: Duplicate Linked
The numbers (if there are any) next to any data block in Blender are there to let you know how many places its being referenced in. To un-link a linked duplicate, click on that number.
One important thing mentioned in this lesson is that many operations in Blender, Duplicate included, do the main action and then jump you into a move mode. Canceling the operation will only cancel the movement and not the main action, so always use Ctrl Z to undo after a mistake rather than hitting escape or right clicking.
