If you can’t define what is most important, then everything is equal. So it doesn’t matter what you work on or what you agree to.

Or, put another way, if you don’t know where you want to go, then it doesn’t matter which road you take.

That’s how some people move through their careers. They drift. They succeed by accident. You know what I mean … raises happen to them, promotions are given to them … but it’s all a function of how long they’ve been at the job, not necessarily based on their performance or their own personal goals.

Important things are things that add to your personal happiness or move you closer to the specific goals you want to achieve. These are things that you will make the time for, regardless of what is going on in your life.

If someone asks you to do something, or be part of something, or change something, it takes seconds to run it through your internal filter and know if you should take it on or not. Or say YES vs NO.

Simply – does saying YES to this decision move you closer to the things you have defined as important, or farther away? If it won’t move you ahead in the areas that are important to you, say NO.

Say it nicely. But say it. The person asking for your time may get upset but they will ultimately find someone else to do it or they’ll just get it done themselves. It’ll be OK.

Don’t distract yourself with other people’s work if it doesn’t align with what you have defined as important.

Obviously, you can’t ALWAYS make this happen. Sometimes your lead needs you to do something and saying no may have bad side effects, but use your best judgement. Each time you are approached and asked to give up some of your time and attention, filter it against your lens.

You’ll be surprised how often you’ll say NO and how often the other person will be OK with that.

Thanks for listening!

Hi! I’m Warren Marshall!

I’m a freelance, hard surface 3D artist living in North Carolina. I specialize in hard surface work but I can do pretty much anything from environments to props.

I worked at Epic Games for over 15 years and started freelancing after that. Since then I’ve done prop and environment work for some fun projects, including We Happy Few from Compulsion Games and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. I’ve also done a bunch of asset packs for the various marketplaces.

I have experience with Unreal Engine 4 and Unity and know how to put assets together quickly that look good in those engines.

Here’s a link to my Art Station page where you can see a bunch of my latest work:
